Teaching
Educating is my Joy…
My goal in teaching is to invite students to be curious and authentic artists, providing them with a solid technical foundation while illuminating the communal necessity of storytelling. I invite students to approach their work with a sense of play and imagination, with full awareness of how their work will impact the world around them. I have developed my skills and interests through teaching, mentoring students, and directing, and music directing theater at collegiate and professional levels.
I believe the goal of arts education should be to inspire students to be inquisitive learners whilst preparing them to be competitive artists in the field.
Equipping students with a holistic understanding of contemporary vocal stylings and diverse acting philosophies are at the heart of my teaching practice. I meet my students where they are and cultivate their gifts from there. I strive to create a safe yet challenging communal atmosphere where each student can discover their unique storytelling ability while simultaneously building artistic relationships.

Hayley Folstein
Singer/Actor
“As someone with a Musical Theatre degree, I have taken A LOT of classes and Marcus' was easily one of the very best. His clear passion for theatre and incredible amount of knowledge really showed. Every single performer was able to grow exponentially in the short time we had together….I hope that Circle can continue to work with Marcus, and continue to explore new workshop opportunities.”
Jose Amoros
Actor/Singer
“Marcus’ Acting Master Class was great! So much valuable, helpful, hands-on, applicable coaching and information in such little time! I wish someone had taught me what I learned today years ago. I would take any other classes with him again.”
Lynne Brown Tepper
Grand Rapids Circle Theatre - Executive/Artistic Director
“Marcus brings a level of dedication to his craft beyond comparison. I have been fortunate to personally be directed by Marcus and I can honestly say that it was one of the best theatrical experiences that I have ever had-if not the best. His work at Circle Theatre has been no exception. His communication skills (both verbal and written) are excellent and his intuitiveness, leadership, compassion for all production team members and collaborative spirit make him truly unique.”
Sam Davis
BFA Acting Major - Western Michigan University
“Working with Marcus has helped me grow tremendously as an artist. His teaching style consists of a very honest, yet caring approach. Training with him has helped me succeed, not only because of his understanding of the voice, but his ability to mentor me in the industry.”
Yaya Bey
Recording Artist/Singer-Songwriter
“I started working with Marcus when I signed my first record deal. At the time I thought I would have a career taking the safe route and never challenging myself vocally. I found a way to “talk sing” on my recordings but Marcus convinced me to that growth was possible for me. I’ve been on a vocal journey ever since. If you listen to my records year after year you can hear the growth. I’m still pushing myself. There’s an affirmation Marcus taught me… ‘I am worthy of making sound’ that I carry with me on the challenging days. Working with Marcus not only gave me technical tools but emotional ones too. Singing is one of the most vulnerable things a person can commit to but it’s totally worth it seeing it through. Marcus is not only a gifted singer himself but also gifted steward of his pupils.”
